Asylum seeker jailed after posing as teenage boy to groom and rape 13-year-old girl

An asylum seeker has been jailed after posing as a teenager to groom and rape a 13-year-old girl he met on social media.

Abdul Khan, who's believed to be 28, arrived in Britain in the back of a lorry in 2015. He has now been jailed for nine and a half years.

He's already serving a 23-month prison sentence for sexual communication with another child.

Jurors in the latest case convicted him of two rapes, sexual activity with a child, sexual communication with a child, meeting a child following grooming, and perverting the course of justice.

Nottingham Crown Court heard Khan chatted with his victim on Snapchat, where he claimed to be a 14-year-old boy, and later met her in a nature reserve in the Clifton area of Nottingham.

He raped her twice in May last year after previous activity that jurors decided had been consensual.

In a victim impact statement, the girl said she "feels numb when she thinks back to how she felt at the time".

Summarising the statement, Judge Mark Watson told the court: "She felt scared of the world after it happened and felt overwhelmed.

"When she has flashbacks she sees his face and what happened. She feels like she can't trust anyone."

Khan's barrister said his client still disputed the identity and age under which he was prosecuted.

The judge called the claims "nonsensical" and said he had deliberately concealed his age from the girl online.

He said: "She thought she was communicating with a child of her own age.

"It was a lie you have persisted with throughout these proceedings."

Khan, who covered his face with his hands as he left the dock, will be automatically deported to Afghanistan after serving two-thirds of his time in prison.

He will also be added indefinitely to the sex offender register.

Detective Constable Madeleine Johnson of Nottinghamshire Police called Khan an "opportunistic and predatory offender" who was "absolutely determined" to pursue young girls for sex.

She said: "The victim in this case was particularly vulnerable at the time of this offence and has unsurprisingly suffered a great deal as a result of what Khan did to her.

"It is thanks to her bravery and the compelling evidence she was able to give that this man is now off our streets for good."
