Claire Ward has been chosen by fellow regional mayors to chair the UK Mayors Network.
The cross-party group brings together mayors from strategic authorities to work on shared priorities including devolution, transport, skills, housing and economic growth.
She takes over from West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin, after serving as deputy chair for the past two years.
Mayor Ward says regions need the powers, funding and flexibility to tackle local challenges and make the most of opportunities.
She says she wants to make sure the voice of mayors is heard at the heart of Government.
East Midlands Combined County Authority chief executive Amy Harhoff has also become chair of the UK Mayors Network Chief Executives.
