Trump posts map renaming New Mexico as 'New America'

Donald Trump has posted a map showing the state of New Mexico rebranded as "New America".

The US president's post on his Truth Social platform showed a map of the southwestern state with the word "Mexico" crossed out and "America" inserted below.

It is not clear why the post appeared, with no further explanation being given.

The image was also shared on social media by the White House without any further clarification.

The post comes less than a fortnight after Mr Trump ordered Lake Ontario on the Canadian border to be renamed as "Lake America" amid an escalating trade war with Canada.

The move led to Google updating its map application, with the company explaining it was due to the US government's Geographic Names Information System formally changing the lake's name.

"People using Maps in the US will see 'Lake America,' those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario,' and those outside of the US and Canada will see both names," Google said.

Within hours of Mr Trump's executive order, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and New York governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, said they would not be changing the name, which is more than 400 years old.

About 52% of the surface area of Lake Ontario is in Canada, with the remainder in New York.

In January 2025, Mr Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed Gulf of America.

Both Google and Apple revised their map apps to reflect the change for US users.

The latest move comes as Mr Trump faces a test of his popularity in November's midterm elections.

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed his approval rating at 33%, the lowest level of his political career.

Republicans are also seeking to defend slim majorities in the House and Senate.
