Thursday, 13 November 2025 11:15

By Jenness Mitchell, Scotland reporter

Two suspects have appeared in court charged with murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice after the body of a man was found in an Inverclyde field.

Police Scotland was called to the scene near to High Mathernock Farm, Kilmacolm, around 15 miles west of Glasgow, at about 9.20am on Tuesday.

The man has been formally identified as Robert Best, 50, who had been reported missing from Greenock on the same day.

Detective Chief Inspector Graham McCreadie said: "Our thoughts are with Robert's family and friends at this time. We are providing them with support as our investigation continues.

Andrew Brodie, 51, and Stephen Shields, 44, were arrested and charged in connection with the case.

The pair appeared before Greenock Sheriff Court on Wednesday, where they made no plea to the two separate charges of murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

The suspects, both of Greenock, were remanded in custody and are due back in the dock within the next week.

A third man, aged 45, was arrested in connection with assault and released pending further enquiries.

Police Scotland said officers investigating Mr Best's death are continuing to carry out enquiries into a report of a disturbance in Lansbury Street, Greenock, which took place between 11pm on Monday and 3am on Tuesday.

Those with information who have yet to speak to officers are encouraged to come forward.

DCI McCreadie added: "An extensive investigation is being carried out and I am asking anyone who was in the Lansbury Street area or near High Mathernock Farm at those times to get in touch.

"If you have CCTV, private footage or dashcam footage that may have captured something, please contact us. Any information, no matter how small it may seem, could be vital."
