Plane crashed into Beijing's tallest building, witnesses say

A plane crashed into Beijing's tallest building on Friday, witnesses said, as roads around the skyscraper were closed off.

The skyscraper, known as CITIC Tower or China Zun, comprises over 100 storeys and stands in Beijing's central business district.

It is the headquarters of the state-owned conglomerate CITIC Group.

The plane which crashed into the building was reportedly no bigger than the size of a car, two bystanders told Reuters.

There has been no comment about the incident from local authorities yet.

Dozens of police cars and several fire trucks lined the roads around the building. Two glass panels on a high floor were damaged.

Police prevented some people from taking pictures and asked others to delete those they had taken, while ushering people away from the building.

One witness, a courier who Reuters spoke to near the building, said he took a video of the aircraft as it stuck out of the building but then deleted it out of fear of being caught by police.

The courier said he had rushed over ‌to CITIC Tower from a nearby location at around 6pm local time after hearing a loud crash.

"It was so loud - louder than fireworks," he said.

Posts on Friday of the building were quickly removed from Chinese social media.
