Man charged with murder over Clapham High Street stabbing

A 22-year-old man has been charged with murder over the death of a man who was stabbed to death during a fight in the street.

Javed Khan, 22, is accused of stabbing Abdulkadir Mahamed to death and faces a charge of violent disorder arising from the same incident in Clapham High Street.

Khan is due to appear at Bromley Magistrates' Court on Monday, alongside a second man, Adonay Berhan, 27, who is accused of assisting an offender.

The Metropolitan Police were called at 4.37am on Saturday morning after reports that Mr Mahamed had been taken to hospital with stab wounds, before he later died.

Police said they believe Mr Mahamad was stabbed close to Tremadoc Road in Clapham, south west London.

Six men were arrested on suspicion of murder, including three aged 22 and a fourth aged 24 who were taken to hospital with stab wounds but later discharged.

On Monday, Scotland Yard said a 25-year-old man also arrested on suspicion of murder remained in custody, after receiving hospital treatment for injuries.

On Saturday, superintendent Mark Gallacher, a policing lead for the area, described it as a "tragic incident".

He added that officers were supporting the family of the man who died.

"We understand that this will cause concern among the local community and specialist detectives are doing everything possible to determine what has happened.

"We are asking anyone with any information or anyone who may have witnessed anything in the early hours to contact us and support with the ongoing investigation."

According to the charges, Berhan is accused of driving away from the scene, allegedly to "impede the apprehension or prosecution" of a third man who is also suspected of murder.

Both Khan, of Wimbledon, and Berhan, from Croydon, are in custody.
