Man charged with failing to disclose information over Manchester synagogue terror attack

A man has been charged in connection with the terror attack at the Heaton Park synagogue in Manchester last year.

Hekmat Omar Ali Hakim, 49, of St James Road, Higher Broughton, is accused of failing to disclose information about terrorist activity.

Two people were killed in the 2 October attack.

Jihad al Shamie, 35, a Syrian-born British citizen, drove into the gates of the synagogue, hitting a security guard, before attacking worshipper Melvin Cravitz with a knife.

Mr Cravitz was killed, as was Adrian Daulby - hit by a single police bullet as he held the doors closed to stop the terrorist getting inside.

Al Shamie, who was wearing a fake suicide vest, was shot dead as he charged at officers with the knife.

Police said today that Hakim, an Iraqi national, had been remanded to appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court tomorrow (21 August).

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts, head of counter-terrorism policing in the North West, called it a "significant development".

The attack happened on Yom Kippur, the holiest day for Jewish people.

Three others were also seriously hurt in the attack, including security guard Bernard Agyemang who suffered multiple broken bones and a suspected brain injury.

A man who plotted with the Manchester attacker to target the UK Defence Academy near Swindon was convicted in July of preparing acts of terror.
