King rides as tank commander in first official Royal Tank Regiment visit since becoming Colonel-in-Chief

The King took a ride in a British Army tank during his first visit to the Royal Tank Regiment (TRT) since ascending to the throne.

He inherited the title of Colonel-in-Chief of the regiment in 2023, after Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022.

In his first visit to the Tank Museum in Bovington, Dorset, since inheriting the title, Charles was seen in a Challenger 2 tank in the commander's seat, while being driven around the site's arena.

The King also inspected the Challenger 3 tank, the British Army's newest battle tank.

He attended the museum as part of the centre's families' day for the relatives of TRT personnel.

Like the late Queen when she visited in 1997, Charles arrived in an armoured 1920 Pattern Rolls-Royce.

When asked later what he thought of the armoured car, the King joked: "Very slow."

While at the museum in Dorset, the King was given a tour of the museum, including the Tank Story Hall where staff explained the history and significance of tanks from the First World War up to the modern day.

He also met four of the RTR's former Colonels-Commandant, who each served as the ceremonial head of the regiment.

The King also presented medals to soldiers on parade, including wider service medals for Operation Cabrit in Estonia, long service, good conduct medals and commendations.

He also had a chance to meet family members of the regiment.

It comes as Buckingham Palace has denied that Prince Harry will stay at the London landmark when he visits this week.

On Monday morning, a representative of Harry told Sky News that he had accepted an offer to stay at the palace.

But Buckingham Palace then denied that he would do so, saying he had missed a deadline.

A spokesman for Harry said the offer had "now been withdrawn," with the upcoming judgment in the prince's case against Associated Newspapers, due on Tuesday, cited as the reason.
