Egypt bus crash: 22 people killed in area popular with tourists

At least 22 people have been killed after a bus crash in the south Sinai area of Egypt, authorities have said.

The accident, which has been reported to have injured 29 other people, happened on the Dahab-Nuweibaa road, the health ministry said in a statement.

A number of Jordanians were on the bus, and initial information indicated ‌some were killed and injured, Jordan's foreign ‌ministry said.

Dahab is around 50 miles north of Sharm el-Sheikh. The southern Sinai peninsula is popular as a destination for tourism, especially diving and snorkelling in the Red Sea.

Dr Ahmed Al-Sabki, head of Egypt's healthcare authority, said the injured were initially taken to a local medical centre. A number of them have since been transferred to the Sharm el-Sheikh International, Saint Catherine, and Al-Fayrouz hospitals.

A statement from the authority added it extended its "heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims of the incident".

Dahab, on the Gulf of Aqaba, is known for its golden beaches, while Nuweibaa is a coastal resort which is popular with backpackers.

Nuweibaa is also a port for the ferry from the Jordanian city of Aqaba, popular with pilgrims en route to and from the holy cities in Saudi Arabia, as well as regional travellers.

Last month, 15 people were killed and 32 injured when a pickup truck carrying workers rolled over in Egypt's Ismailia Governorate. The ‌accident happened in front of the Al-Shabab power station in the Al-Dawawis area.
