Trump says US envoys bringing 'proposal to end war' to Russia and Ukraine

Donald Trump says US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff will travel to Moscow and Kyiv with a "proposal to end the war".

Mr Witkoff and Mr Kushner will travel to Russia and then Ukraine over the weekend and into next week - marking their first visit to the Ukrainian capital.

The US has not provided further details on the trip, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday that he was expecting the pair to visit Kyiv on Sunday.

In a Telegram post, he confirmed that Ukraine would refrain from airstrikes during the negotiations.

He said: "As with previous diplomatic visits by the American side, we will ensure the normal functioning of Russian airspace so that the negotiators can arrive safely. We are concerned about their safety, not about Russia."

Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov refused to confirm whether Mr Kushner and Mr Witkoff would visit Moscow on Friday.

They last visited the Russian capital in January, after which an aide to Vladimir Putin said that "reaching a long-term settlement can't be expected without solving the territorial issue".

The US president said of the upcoming trip: "They are bringing with them a proposal to end the war."

It comes after Mr Zelenskyy said that a Russian drone struck the headquarters of Ukraine's state security service (SBU) on Friday.

At least seven people were injured in the attack on the building in Kyiv, across from the historic St Sophia Cathedral.

Heavy black smoke was seen rising from the city centre, along with numerous ambulances and emergency services at the scene.

Mr Zelenskyy posted on X: "The drone was aimed directly at the office of the head of the security service in that building."

He said he had spoken with the head of Ukraine's security service, Oleksandr Poklad, and instructed him to deliver an "appropriate" response to Russia that "mirrors this strike".

It was not immediately clear if SBU members were among those injured.

Throughout the war, the SBU has carried out high-impact strikes targeting Russia's war machine and its energy infrastructure.

It bombed a Russian bridge to occupied Crimea in 2022 and carried out a 2025 drone attack which struck Russian strategic bombers.

Friday's attack marks one of the rare occasions in which a Ukrainian government building has been damaged during the conflict.

The ‌owner of the popular Zavertailo bakery said on Telegram that their building opposite the SBU building was also destroyed in the attack.

Kyiv has faced repeated Russian drone attacks for 10 days, with a university in the city centre also hit on Wednesday.
