Teenager dies after 'exiting' ambulance on M5

An 18-year-old man has died after he left an ambulance and was hit by a car on the M5 motorway, police have said.

It happened on Sunday night, between junctions 20 and 21, after the vehicle had stopped to provide further treatment on the northbound carriageway.

Police said the man was being taken to hospital but "exited the ambulance" and was then reported to be on the motorway.

An off-duty officer tried to get the man to safety, but the man was hit by a car travelling south and died at the scene.

The man hasn't yet been identified.

Assistant chief constable Joanne Hall, from Avon and Somerset Police, said their thoughts were with the man's family and that police and ambulance staff were also "incredibly upset" by what happened.

She said the incident had been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has already started an independent investigation.

The M5 was closed to deal with the incident but reopened on Monday morning.
