Girl, 14, sectioned after two pupils and staff member stabbed at school

A schoolgirl arrested after three people were injured in a school knife attack has been detained under the Mental Health Act, police said.

The 14-year-old had been held on suspicion of assault after officers were called to reports of a stabbing at the Co-op Academy in north Manchester on Tuesday morning, according to Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

On Wednesday, police said she has now been sectioned for assessment in hospital since her initial arrest.

Following the attack, staff at the school quickly restrained the girl to make sure no one else was hurt, GMP said.

A girl and a boy, both 14, and a 27-year-old male staff member were taken to hospital. All three have since been released as their injuries were "not believed to be serious", police added.

The school, on Blackley, went into lockdown following the stabbings.

Chief Inspector Jon Shilvock said: "Our thoughts are with those that were injured and were caught up in the incident.

"Whilst the physical injuries were not believed to be serious, we know the impact to those that were involved, or were witnesses to this, will be significant, and we want to reassure our community we are taking this very seriously."

CI Shilvock warned against online speculation over the incident, while the investigation is ongoing.

"As our investigation progresses, we are aware that names relating to the incident are being circulated on social media, which are unhelpful for the investigation," he added.

"This is also causing concern with the victims and those that have been impacted, therefore we would stress that people do not speculate regarding this incident."
