Daredevil adventurer nicknamed 'Spider-Man of Yemen' dies climbing volcanic crater

A daredevil adventurer nicknamed "The Spider-Man of Yemen" has died after falling into a volcano crater while attempting to climb a vertical rock face without safety equipment.

Al Qapa Ibn Antar was attempting to climb the walls of the Hardah Dam volcanic crater when he lost his grip and fell into the 120-metre crater, according to Yemen's Civil Defence Authority, which posted a video of the moment he fell.

The 10-second video shows the 30-year-old climbing a rocky cliff without safety equipment, scaling names in Arabic written across the rocky wall.

He is then seen holding the cliff with his right hand, with his left hand in the air, before appearing to lose his grip and falling.

Rescue teams found Antar's body 30 metres below the water surface in the crater, after a four-hour search.

Authorities say the rescue mission was "complex" due to the steep and rocky location, which made access difficult.

The Hardah Dam is a volcanic crater near the city of Damt, in Yemen's southern Dahle province, around 176km (109 miles) south of the Yemeni capital Sanaa.

The crater has steep rocky walls with a hot sulphurous lake at its base.

Antar gained fame on social video by posting videos of himself performing high-risk ascents in some of Yemen's most rugged terrains, including one video of him hanging from the edge of a rocky cliff with his bare hands, with his legs dangling toward a steep slope without safety equipment.

Yemen's Civil Defence Authority has urged people who climb and engage in adventure sports to observe safety procedures and use "appropriate protective gear to avert similar incidents."
