Boy, 16, has potentially life-threatening injuries after shooting near Birmingham mosque

A teenager has been left with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds after a shooting near a Birmingham mosque.

Police were called to reports of a shooting on Bowyer Road, close to St Saviours Road in the city, shortly before 5.30pm on Wednesday.

The boy, aged 16, has been taken to hospital.

Officers are carrying out forensic and CCTV enquiries, and speaking to people in the area.

At this stage, they do not believe the shooting is connected to the mosque.

West Midlands Police said in a statement: "We understand this is extremely worrying for people in the area, and local officers will be remaining there to speak to anyone with concerns."

Officers are appealing for anyone who saw what happened or has footage from the area to contact them.
