Body recovered in search for teenager swept into sea

The body of 15-year-old Grace Keeling, who was swept into the sea with her mother, is believed to have been found, police have said.

Her body was discovered among rocks on Withernsea beach at 8.30am on Thursday.

Tide times, weather conditions and the location meant emergency workers were unable to recover Grace before high tide on Friday.

"This morning, with the help of HM Coastguard, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and other specialist assistance, we have been able to safely recover Grace," said Detective Superintendent Simon Vickers.

Although formal identification is yet to take place, Humberside Police say they believe the body belongs to the teenager who was swept into the sea on 2 January, along with her mother, Sarah Keeling, who also died.

A member of the public, Mark Ratcliffe, also died trying to rescue the pair.

It is thought that Grace and a friend were on steps near the rocks on Withernsea beach when Grace fell into the water after being swept by a wave.

Grace's mum and three other members of the public, including Mr Ratcliffe, immediately entered the water in an effort to save Grace.

"This was a deeply upsetting incident, and I cannot begin to understand the heartbreak felt by all the loved ones of those involved," said DS Vickers.

"We have spoken with Grace's family and updated them, and we are continuing to support them with specially trained officers at this extremely difficult time.

"Understandably, they have asked for their privacy, and we would ask that this is respected."

"Our thoughts and sincere sympathies will always remain with the families of Grace and Sarah Keeling, and Mark Ratcliffe following this utter tragedy."
