Belfast stabbing victim may lose sight in right eye, family say, after losing left in attack

The family of the victim of the Belfast stabbing said he is out of an induced coma but may lose sight in his right eye.

Stephen Ogilvie lost his left eye and suffered deep cuts to his head, face and back in the stabbing at Kinnaird Avenue in north Belfast last week.

Hadi Alodid, 30, appeared at Belfast Magistrates' Court charged with attempted murder over the incident.

He is next due to appear before court via videolink on 8 July.

In a statement on a GoFundMe page for their son, Mr Ogilvie's mother and father thanked people for their support and donations, and confirmed that he is out of his coma.

"The funds raised will help provide Stephen with the equipment, support, and everyday items he may need as he adjusts to life following this attack," they said.

"With the loss of sight in his left eye and the possibility of losing sight in his right eye, your generosity will make a real difference to his future quality of life.

"We have been truly humbled by the kindness of so many people, many of whom have never met our family."

Police previously said that Alodid, a Sudanese national, entered Northern Ireland by bus from Dublin in February 2023, having flown to Dublin from Paris.

He then claimed asylum upon arrival and was granted leave to remain in the UK until 2028.

A graphic video clip of the stabbing went viral, leading to anti-immigration disorder in Belfast last week, with homes, cars and a bus set on fire and people targeted based on their race.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said there have been 35 arrests made and 23 people charged to date after the disorder.
