At least five dead in Amazon plane crash

An Amazon cargo plane has overshot a runway at Miami International Airport, hitting multiple vehicles.

There were at least five dead, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava told a news conference.

Three others are critically injured and two others are in hospital with less severe injuries, Miami-Dade rescue fire chief Ray Jadallah added.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the Boeing 767 overran the runway at around 2pm (7pm UK time) after heading into Florida from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Flights have been halted, with all runways and taxiways closed.

Around 60 firefighters were at the scene.

The plane came to rest beside a road, with two lorries parked nearby.

Amazon earlier told NBC in a statement: "We can confirm that an Amazon Air plane operated by 21 Air experienced an incident while attempting to land at Miami International Airport today.

"This is a fast-moving situation and we're still gathering details. We're working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened.

"Right now, our absolute priority is the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved. We're doing everything we can to support those affected."

US secretary of transportation Sean Duffy posted on X: "We've issued a full ground stop at Miami International while first responders assess the scene after an Amazon cargo plane overran the runway.

"If you're traveling through the area, please expect significant delays and potential cancellations."

In a statement a spokesperson for Boeing said: "Boeing extends our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the accident in Miami.

"Our hearts go out to those injured and affected by this tragedy. Boeing is supporting the investigation led by the US National Transportation Safety Board."

The FAA has said that flights will be delayed once the airport reopens, with a low rate of arrivals and departures.

Around 250 flights were delayed at the airport as of late afternoon local time on Sunday.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it is "gathering information" about the crash.
