Arsenal reach Champions League final for the first time in 20 years

Arsenal have reached the final of the Champions League for the first time in 20 years following victory over Spanish side Atletico Madrid. 

Bukayo Saka scored the only goal of Tuesday's game in a 1-0 win to ensure the Gunners progressed 2-1 on aggregate over two legs, sparking jubilant scenes at the final whistle inside the Emirates Stadium.

The result means Mikel Arteta's side, who are currently top of the Premier League and unbeaten in Europe this season, remain on course for what would be a historic double.

Saka's goal came on the stroke of half-time, with the England international and captain-on-the-night steering in the rebound after Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak had parried Leandro Trossard's low shot.

An 'incredible night'

After the game, Arteta hailed what he called an "incredible night" in north London and praised the supporters for making the occasion "special".

The Gunners' manager said: "I cannot be happier or prouder of everyone involved in this club. Outside the stadium was special and unique.

"The atmosphere the supporters generated, the energy, it made it special. I never felt that in the stadium.

"We put everything. The boys did an incredible job."

Arsenal will face either Bayern Munich or defending champions Paris Saint-Germain in the final in Budapest on 30 May, with the Gunners looking to triumph in Europe's elite club competition for the first time.

The recently-crowned German champions host the Ligue 1 side on Wednesday evening, with the tie delicately poised at 5-4 in favour of the French club after the first leg.

It has been two decades since Arsenal reached this stage of the competition. In 2006 - the club's only other appearance in the final - they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Barcelona in Paris after taking the lead but later going down to 10 men when goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was sent off.

Arsenal's women's team, however, have fared better in European competitions, lifting the Women's Champions League - previously called the UEFA Women's Cup - on two occasions, with the most recent coming in 2025.

They were eliminated at the semi-final stage of this season's competition earlier this month.
