Kirkby Christmas Celebration 2023 this week

Ashfield District Council’s second Christmas light switch on event is taking place on Kirkby Plaza car park this week on Thursday 30 November.

The big light switch on will take place at 7pm and will see the tree, town centre lights and popular 3D feature light come to life.

Join the festive fun in Kirkby from 4pm – 7.30pm and enjoy a packed stage with performances from Kingsway Primary School, Ashwood Church, Greenwood Primary School, Christine March School of Dance, Orchard Primary School, and Kirkby Chorus. The stage will finish with a grand finale by Red Hot Band.

Red Hot band said “Red Hot Band are a Jazz and Funk young people’s community band, supported by Inspire Music @ Inspire; Culture, Learning and Libraries. Young musicians from across the County rehearse weekly at Mansfield Old Library, we have a great time sharing our love for music. A few of are talented musicians are from Kirkby in Ashfield, they are very proud to be performing for their hometown on Thursday”.

Greenwood school said ”Greenwood is honoured to be taking part in this community event once again this year. We are a lead Singing Hub School for Ashfield and work closely with Nottinghamshire Inspire Music Hub to provide many wonderful musical opportunities four our pupils”.

Cllr Jason Zadrozny, Leader of Ashfield District Council said

“We had a fantastic turnout at Sutton last week and we are hoping to exceed that this week at Kirkby. So wrap up warm and come down to the Plaza to support the acts on stage, the local traders and get into the festive spirit.”  

Orchard Primary School said “Orchard Primary and Nursery School Choir love to sing! Christmas is such a special time for our children to enjoy performing and bringing special Christmas Joy to the wider community”.

Ashwood church said “Carol Service presented by Kirkby Churches Together.  Celebrating the Hope, love and Joy of Christmas. Also praying for our world and our town at this time of year".

As well as the live entertainment there will be almost 50 stalls for visitors to browse across Lowmoor Road, the Plaza, and in Moor Market offering everything from jewellery, candles, crafts, gifts, knitted toys, personalised gifts, pocket money toys, and plenty of food options to keep the whole family happy.

Food and drink options include the ever-popular Project D donuts, Back-a-Yard Jamaican cuisine, authentic German sausage, Colombo Street Sri Lankan street food, Arlos Bakehouse, Penny Lane Fudge, hot chocolate, flavoured cheeses, brownies, cakes and more.

For the event Ellis Street car park will be closed and Ellis Street will be closed from 12pm. The Council will be making parking in Hodgkinson Road park free for the event from 3pm.

The final Christmas event is taking place in Hucknall on Wednesday 6 December.
