Woodhouse Business Owner Sentenced For VAT Scam
Clifford Lockwood pocketed thousands of pounds after fraudulently charging his customers tax.
He didn’t register NL Windows & Doors Ltd in Mansfield Woodhouse until after HMRC began investigating the firm, and used fake VAT numbers on his invoices in order to steal £32,349 from October 2013 to April 2015.
Mr. Lockwood 40, of Murray Street, Mansfield, charged his customers more than £32,000 VAT but kept the money, a HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) investigation revealed.
Lockwood confessed to tax fraud at Nottingham Crown Court last month and he was sentenced to a 10-month prison sentence suspended for two years at the same court yesterday.
A HMRC spokesperson said:
“Lockwood thought it was acceptable to steal from the public purse and he is now paying the price. He stole money from trusting customers and those who play by the rules.
“If you know of anyone who is committing tax fraud you can report them by calling the HMRC Fraud Hotline on 0800 788 887.”
