Wolf Hunt take play-off title for third year in a row
Mansfield-based rugby league side Sherwood Wolf Hunt have been crowned the champions of Midlands League Division One for the third successive year.
They defeated Derby City 42-16 in the Play-Off Final that took place on Saturday in Birmingham, leaving a jubilant captain Lee Chapman to lift the trophy that Wolf Hunt had also claimed in 2015 and 2016.
Wolf Hunt faced a Derby side who they had lost convincingly to in both of their league fixtures but the win was never in doubt this time round when they raced into a 22-0 lead.
Tries from Mason Hardwick (2), Charlie Mason and Joe Ducker gave them the perfect start and, although Derby pulled the scoreline back to 26-12 at the break, it was the Debdale Lane side who pushed on in the second period.
Ducker went over the try line again as did Daniel Pearson and Ben Lee to finish the game as a contest before Mikey Wallis, who had been at the club since its inception four years ago, came on as a replacement and scored his first ever try.
The final whistle sparked wild celebrations amongst the Wolf Hunt players, management staff and supporters and, after the trophy presentation, coach Glenn Holt told the club's website: "From a coach's perspective, I couldn’t have asked for much more.
"I felt like we’d prepared as well as we could for this game. From the team run the day before, the lads were switched on and intent on going to bring the title back, and that showed from the very first set.
"We were clinical on attack, and showed some real desire at times to keep the Derby attack from scoring.
"It was a very proud day for the club."
