What will we name after Ollie Hynd now?
On a dark spring morning earlier this year, I was at Water Meadows with Katie, doing the breakfast show beside the competition pool. It was barely 6am, the humidity was stifling, and it was a monumental effort for me just to run between our table and the vending machine for the much-needed cups of tea. But just below us, one man was a blur in the swimming pool, putting in length after length after length. Impressed, I remember thinking to myself that he should really consider turning professional, until Katie pointed out it was Kirkby Paralympian Ollie Hynd. It's probably a good job I'd not introduced myself by then.
At that point, Ollie had just (just!) one Paralympic Gold to his name, but fast-forward a few months and he's now a triple champion, with two more gongs from his time in Brazil. I always get behind any British sporting success, but something about a gold medallist coming not just from your country, or even your county, but just a few miles away from where you grew up, makes their achievements seem even more special. Ollie's already got half of the Water Meadows competition pool named after him (along with the equally impressive Charlotte Henshaw), so it makes you wonder – what can we name after him now?
