WEEKEND FOOTBALL | Stags beaten at Colchester

9th October 2017

Mansfield Town were unable to build on the previous weekend's excellent home win over League Two leaders Notts County as they went down 2-0 at Colchester United on Saturday.

The Stags started brightly in Essex but were stunned by a double strike in quick succession from their hosts, Sean Murray breaking the deadlock just before the half hour mark and then Mickael Mandron increased their lead six minutes later.

Steve Evans' side were frustrated as the hosts defended stoutly during the second period to preserve their lead and Mansfield drop a place to ninth, two points off the play-off zone and nine points behind new leaders Exeter.

The Grecians returned to the top by replacing Notts County who drew 1-1 at home to bottom side Forest Green Rovers, Rob Milsom rescuing a point for the Magpies in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

There was disappointment on Non League Day, meanwhile, for Alfreton Town who were beaten 2-0 at home by Chorley to leave the Reds fourteenth in Vanarama National League North.

Nick Houghton scored from his own half to give the visitors a twelfth-minute lead and he added a second to seal the win late on after Alfreton keeper Chris Elliott had saved a penalty whilst the hosts struck the woodwork with their best chance.

AFC Mansfield stay eighth in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division despite a 4-0 home thumping of Albion Sports, Oliver Fearon with a hat-trick to take his tally to fifteen for the season.

Rainworth Miners Welfare were left to rue a last minute equaliser for Worksop Town as it finished 1-1 at Kirklington Road and the Wrens drop to eleventh.

And, Clipstone almost fought back from a 3-0 half-time deficit at Hall Road Rangers but were beaten 3-2 to stay bottom without a point.

A 2-1 loss at Coventry Sphinx saw South Normanton Athletic fall to nineteenth in the Total Motion Midland League Premier Division whilst Teversal have extended their lead at the top of the East Midlands Counties League to three points after Dave Cockerill, Matt Wilkinson and Josh Radford netted in a 3-1 home win over Barrow Town.

Sam Dockwray and Declan Brewin scored for Shirebrook Town as they beat high-flying visitors Grimsby Borough, 2-1, to climb up to ninth in Toolstation NCEL Division One.

They go above FC Bolsover who were beaten 4-0 at leaders Knaresborough Town whilst Ollerton Town are fifteenth after they drew 2-2 at Glasshoughton Welfare, Josh Bowkett and Gavin King netting late in to rescue a point.

In the First Round of the Derbyshire Senior Cup, Pinxton won 4-3 on penalties after it finished 3-3 at Belper United, Clay Cross Town won 3-2 at Graham Street Prims but South Normanton bowed out on spot kicks after it ended 2-2 at home to Tideswell United.

Selston were 5-1 home victors over Linby Colliery Welfare in the Nottinghamshire Senior Cup First Round and there was a first half hat-trick for Patrick Webb as Eastwood Community progressed with a 4-0 win at Blidworth Welfare.

And, in the Abacus Lighting Central Midlands League, Hucknall Town move up to fourth in Black Dragon Division South following a 5-1 victory at Swanwick Pentrich Road, Joe Ashurst with two of their goals.
