Waiting game for Evans in transfer bids

23rd January 2017

Mansfield Town boss Steve Evans has said that bids for two players will not be completed before Tuesday night's Checkatrade Trophy quarter-final clash at home to Wycombe Wanderers.

Speaking at Monday's press conference, Evans told Mansfield 103.2 that talks with a player took place yesterday as planned but nothing is expected to develop from that until Wednesday at the earliest.

He would not reveal any clues about the player, only that it would be a permanent signing and that he hoped to simply take over the eighteen months left on their contract at their current club.

Evans also confirmed that a bid that has been tabled for around £300,000 for another player is not for striker Paul Taylor of Peterborough as has been speculated on social media.

Once again, keeping his cards close to his chest, he would not reveal much about the target, only that it would be an "investment for the future" should the transfer take place.

Evans is expecting to know whether their bid has been successful on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Stags manager is hoping to bring in another player on loan before the end of the week whilst one could be going out on loan prior to Saturday's League Two home game with Leyton Orient.

Evans, who has been named EFL Manager of the Week following his side's 3-1 win at Cambridge United on Saturday, says that his focus is now fully on the cup match with Wycombe.

Covers were put on the One Call Stadium pitch on Monday afternoon as a precautionary measure to ensure the tie will certainly go ahead.

A win would put the Stags just one game away from the final at Wembley in April which would be their first appearance at the national stadium since the FA Trophy defeat to Darlington in 2011.

Wycombe come to Mansfield just four days before a massive FA Cup clash with Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

But, Evans has warned them that it will be a physical encounter, describing it as an exciting tie between two good League Two sides.
