Tuesday football: Clements ends Stags goal drought

A Chris Clements free-kick earned Mansfield Town a well deserved point in a 1-1 draw at Accrington Stanley in League Two on Tuesday night.

His 22-yard strike crashed in off the underside of the crossbar to give the Stags an half-hour lead at the Wham Stadium and end 481 minutes without a goal for Adam Murray’s men.

Mansfield, however, were pegged back when Terry Gornell bundled home the ball for Accrington early in the second period after the Stags had failed to deal with a free-kick.

The draw leaves the side in fourteenth spot but they are just three points away from the play-off positions.

Notts County, meanwhile, are up to fifth after Jon Stead’s first-half brace earned a 2-0 win at Exeter City.

In the Championship, Nicklas Bendtner put Nottingham Forest ahead at home to Fulham but they could not hold on to their lead as they drew 1-1.

Thomas Ince and Nick Blackman netted for Derby County as they won 2-0 at Cardiff City in a match where boss Nigel Pearson was not in the dugout.

His future at the club is now in doubt following a reportedly “explosive row” with chairman and owner Mel Morris.

In non-league, Shirebrook Town bowed out of the Derbyshire Senior Cup with a 1-0 home loss to New Mills whilst, in the NCEL, Ollerton Town won 2-0 at home to Eccleshill United and, in the Central Midlands League, Clay Cross went down 3-0 at Dronfield Town Reserves.
