Tour Of Britain Launch At Summer Festival

17th July 2018
Sport, News, Mansfield

The build-up to Mansfield's involvement in the Tour of Britain race event will be launched at Mansfield District Council's first Summer Festival of the year at King George V Park on Thursday 26 July.

It is hoped that one or two elite cyclists will be at the launch. There will also be information available about the Tour of Britain and people will also be able to sign up as a volunteer Tour Maker to help steward the race on the day.

The first Summer Festival, from 10am to 3pm, will be the first of three festivals with a strong cycling theme to be held over the summer period, with another at Carr Lane Park, Market Warsop, on Thursday 9 August, from 10am to 3pm.

The final one will be held on the day of the Tour of Britain on Saturday 8 September in Chesterfield Road Park from 11am to 4pm close to the finishing line of the Nottinghamshire stage of the race outside Mansfield Civic Centre.

Tour of Britain themed fun will feature in a big way at this year's Summer Festivals, which are set to include more free activities to keep families entertained over the summer holidays.

Cllr Andrew Tristram, Portfolio Holder for the Environment and Wellbeing, said: "There's something for all the family, and especially cycling enthusiasts, so come along and join in the fun!"

Among the activities will be:

  • Cycling skills competition
  • Giant garden games
  • Balance workshops
  • Children's activities, including face painting
  • Information stands on topical issues
  • Arts and crafts with a nature and wildlife theme
  • Free goodie bags including beach balls and sports bottles (while stocks last)
  • Live music from the Maypole Goodtime Band and Mansfield and District Corps of Drums
  • Pony rides
  • Punch and Judy shows
  • Food and drinks vans.

Most activities are free but some charities may charge a small expected donation for their activities.

Parking at King George V Park, off Black Scotch Lane, is limited so festival goers are advised to walk or use public transport if possible.
