Panthers and Steelers legend facing leukaemia battle

Legendary coach of both the Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers Alex Dampier is battling leukaemia, it has been revealed.

The 65-year-old has moved from his home in his native Canada to a specialist hospital in Cleveland, USA, where he will undergo a bone marrow transplant in a bid to fight the cancer.

Dampier joined the Panthers as coach in 1985, winning the Norwich Union Trophy in 1986, the Autumn Cup in 1991 and the play-offs in 1989, and he was twice named as the British Ice Hockey Writers Association's Coach of the Year whilst at the club.

He left to take over at the Steelers in 1993 where he guided them to promotion into the British Hockey League Premier Division before winning the club's first league championship in 1995, their first Grand Slam a year later and then a playoff triumph in 1997.

After a short spell at Newcastle Riverkings, Dampier returned to the Panthers as Director of Hockey in 1999 for a couple of years before joining the Newcastle Vipers in 2002.

Panthers General Manager Gary Moran, who worked with Dampier, told the club's website: "He's a great guy and has a great spirit about him.

"He was a joy to work with and then he was a joy to work alongside when he came back to coach in the new era.

"He's just one of life's class acts, he's a great bloke on and off the ice and he had a stunning career.

"We can only send our very, very best wishes, all our positive thoughts and energy to Alex, his lovely wife Sally and his daughter Alexandra."
