MP Joins Fight To Reduce Food Waste
Sherwood MP Mark Spencer this week joined charities in a bid to promote alternatives to throwing away waste food. At a workshop in the House of Commons he met a variety of organisations with the shared goal of reducing food waste. It is estimated that 7 million tonnes of edible food is thrown away in the UK each year, often because people either don’t plan their meals well in terms of the quantities cooked, or because people are put off the idea of eating leftovers. The organisations at the workshop today were showcasing a range of options which are available to people in order to tackle this problem, include meal planning guides, recipes for leftovers, and packs of tip cards to reduce this problem.
Mr Spencer said ‘’I spoke to lots of representatives who were very energetic and had lots to tell me about their exciting projects. One of these groups, Wrap UK, told me about their commitment to, by 2025, reduce the resource intensity of the UK’s food & drink by one-fifth, saving £20 billion, and lead organisations from across the food chain to work together to face up to the challenge of food and drink waste, greenhouse gas emissions and water intensity. Over 100 signatories including all major UK food retailers, brands, food service companies, trade bodies and local authorities have already signed up, and it looks to be an exciting and dynamic project to tackle a huge, but largely overlooked problem facing the UK today. It’s great now to see some supermarkets making a commitment to reducing waste and it’s an issue we need to continue to tackle.’’
