Councillors Resign as Private Security Debate Rumbles On
Selston's Parish
Council has been hit by the resignation of four of its councillors,
after proposals for the village to bring in its own private policing
were met with a hostile response at a recent meeting.
Arnie Hankin, Michael Biggs, Robert Sears-Piccavey and Gail Turner have all stood down, with Councillor Turner saying she had made the decision because of threats made against her.
The party had suggested holding a referendum in the village to see if residents were willing to pay for extra security, but Councillor Turner said “I don't know what [the parish council] are going to do now. My issue is that those people who came to a meeting last year in tears, some of whom had been attacked in the street.. their voices are being lost.”
The proposals were met with some vocal criticism at a meeting on January 10th, where Nottinghamshire's Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping also answered questions from residents. The next meeting of the Parish Council is scheduled for January 24th.
