Women being denied 43p life saving breast cancer drug
The head of Breast Cancer Now says it's 'depressing' thousands of women are being denied drugs costing just pennies a day - because of funding squabbles.
Bisphosphonates are usually used to treat osteoporosis, but they can stop breast cancer spreading.
The charity says disputes about who should pay for them are affecting patients across the UK.
Baroness Morgan said: “It’s good news that we’ve found Bisphosphonates can be used in this way for breast cancer, but it’s depressing that its taking such a long time and there's such confusion about how the system can be turned towards delivering this benefit for women.”
However health commissioners in Mansfield and Ashfield say work is being done to solve the issue.
Dr Amanda Sullivan, chief officer for the Mansfield and Ashfield CCG said: “I think there is some variation across the country and perhaps a slight lack of guidance.
“NHS England have asked the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to have a really good look at this, and they are working on some new guidelines, so when they come out I think it will be clearer for everyone what the expectations are and what the benefits will be.”
