Weekend Action

12th January 2018

Back to league action for teams in our area.

Starting off with Mansfield Town, they go to 13th placed Cambridge in League 2. The Stags are 7th in the table, but just a point off 3rd place.

Last time the two sides met earlier in the season a Jacob Mellis penalty and an 7th minute winner from Danny Rose were enough for The Stags to pick up a 2-1 win.

There's a full preview of tomorrow's game here

What a week it's been for Nottingham Forest! Last Sunday they beat Arsenal (something Chelsea haven't done in three attempts this season) and then on Monday they appointed Spaniard Aitor Karanka as their new boss on a two and a half year deal. Tomorrow they have a tough test though against Aston Villa.

The Reds host Villa in the 5:30 kick off in the Championship looking for their first league win in over a month. Teenage striker Ben Brereton impressed against Arsenal and will look to do the same against 5th placed Villa. Teams may start sniffing around powerful front man if he continues to put in stellar performances, especially as we are in the January transfer window.

Forest lost 2-1 at Villa Park earlier in the season.

Derby County also face a side from the West Midlands but their fortunes contrast from Aston Villa's. The Rams travel to St. Andrews to take on second bottom Birmingham City.

Boss Gary Rowett had been heavily linked with the Stoke job in the week but he put that speculation to bed signing and new deal to stay at Pride Park until the end of the 2020-21 season. This morning Rowett was named Championship manager of the month for December having led his side to five wins and a draw in the month.

Reading were the last side to beat Derby in the league, an unbeaten run that stretches back to 4th November. A water-tight defence has propelled them up to 2nd in the Championship and keeper Scott Carson won the league's player of the month award for December. He conceded just one goal in the month.

There's a great game in League Two as 2nd place Notts County go to Lincoln who are 6th. County will be looking to build on their win over Championship Brentford in the FA Cup last weekend.

The gap to Luton at the top is four points and the leaders could well maintain that as they are away at struggling Chesterfield.

Forest loanee Jorge Grant has impressed this season at Meadow Lane scoring 13 league goals, a total that puts him behind only Billy Kee (16) and the ever prolific Danny Hylton (15).

NON-LEAGUE

AFC Mansfield have an 11 point lead at the top of the NCEL Premier Division and this weekend have a long trip to Bottesford Town.

Rudy Funk's men have scored 71 goals so far this season, 32 goal man Oliver Fearon is on a drought having not scored since this year, it's only been two games however.

Elsewhere in the top division Clipstone host Garforth Town and will be hoping new gaffer Jamie Hardwick can bring them their first points of the season.

Ian Cotton stepped down from his role at the Worksop Van Hire Stadium this week with the Cobras rock bottom of the league, but Cotton was praised by all at the club. Being a local man he came on board when it looked like the club would have to drop out of their league due to financial reasons. He steadied the ship.

Rainworth Miners Welfare are enjoying a good season, they're 7th and tomorrow go to mid-table side Liversedge.

Shirebrook Town seem to be the best of the rest in NCEL Division One this season. They're 5th but nine points away from the side above them and tomorrow welcome 2nd placed Eccleshill United to Langwith Road. Time to make a statement?

Meanwhile FC Bolsover are at Campion and Ollerton Town host Winterton Rangers, both looking for wins to ease slight relegation worries.

Teversal are top of the East Midlands Counties Premier but Selston are hot on their heels. The Tevie Boys are without a game this weekend so Selston can close the gap to just a single point. It won't be easy though as 3rd position Anstey Nomads come to town.

The run in to the end of the season starts here and all the sides in our area have plenty to play for.

Jason Harrison will keep you right up to date with all of the action from 1 tomorrow
