Under-13 Cricket Team win National Title at Edgbaston

The Joseph Whitaker School’s Under 13 Boys’ Cricket Team have won the ‘Chance to Shine’ Trophy at the National Finals at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham.

The team qualified for the Finals by winning the Regional Final in July against schools from Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire.

In the semi-final JWS played Sale Grammar School and won by 31 runs. Asked to bat first JWS scored 89-0 and in reply Sale could only muster 58-3. Notable performance in the semi-final was by Tom Davies with some huge sixes.

Joseph Whitaker School won the toss in the final and asked Canterbury Academy to bat first, they made an imposing 79 runs from their 7 overs. However, there was no stopping JWS with the boys scoring runs at a fast rate and winning by 9 wickets with ten balls to spare.

The team were presented with the trophy by former Nottinghamshire and England batsman, James Taylor.

PE Teacher and Team Coach Richard Bishop said: “This result is an amazing achievement for the team and is a fitting reward for their hard work and determination. They have demonstrated a strong team ethic throughout the tournament and at times displayed moments of utter brilliance.”

Headteacher David Bell said: “To win a national competition is really special and to do so at Edgbaston with family and friends supporting the boys was fantastic. All the school is really proud of them and what a great way to start the new term.”
