Teacher Shortage At Nurseries Risks Children’s Development

Nurseries in England are apparently caught-up in a recruitment crisis - and it's claimed kids are suffering. Save the Children says half of three and four year olds are going somewhere without qualified teachers. The charity thinks every nursery should have one to help young people develop before they start school.

It comes after figures last week showed new figures show that nearly a third of teachers in England who started in 2010 had quit by last year.

Sandra Mayfield is the Operations Director for Teachers UK, who are based in Mansfield, ans she says that the changes brought in by the government in recent years has contributed to the problem, “There is so many different things now that have changed in the education system over the last few years, a lot of work they have to do in their own time. It has become a very pressurerised place for them to work.”

The charity found that children in nurseries without a qualified teacher to develop them in their early years, were almost 10% less likely to meet the levels required in their development at five than children in nurseries with qualified teachers.
