STUB IT OUT | E-Cigs – A smokers perspective

As smokers look to cut out tobacco from their lives, they will suffer from withdrawal symptoms as the absence of tobacco takes hold. A way to cope with that which has grown in popularity over the past six years is the use of electronic cigarettes.

An E-Cig is a handheld electronic device that vaporizes a flavoured liquid where instead of inhaling smoking tobacco, the user inhales the vapor. The fluid in the e-cigarette, called e-liquid, is usually made of nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerine, and flavourings.

Experts say that whilst the use of an E-Cigarette is certainly safer than smoking, the long term effects remain unknown. Despite the concerns, the growth of the E-Cig and vapour industry has been rapid – with stalls and shops opening on high-streets in towns across the country.

As stoptober continues, taking up e-cigs seems to be the easiest progression path to stop smoking, despite 25% of current smokers who have never tried an e-Cig before, saying they believe E-Cigs to be more harmful long term, whilst 27% of those asked expressed concerns over the general safety of the product.

The ASH charity recently conducted extensive research on e-cigarettes and found a group of current smokers who attempted to quit using an e-cig but quit the e-cig and continued smoking.

20% admitted going back to cigarettes because e-cigs didn’t help them deal with cravings for smoking, whilst 25% said that using an e-cig, didn’t feel like smoking a real cigarette.

Over a quarter of respondents were also concerned about ‘substituting one addiction for another’ – experts believe that this could indicate some misunderstanding about the relative harm from nicotine, as smokers who haven’t yet tried an electronic cigarette are also more likely to have poor understanding of the harms from nicotine than smokers who have tried electronic cigarettes.

Statistics show that 8% of smokers who haven’t tried an electronic cigarette correctly state that nicotine’s contribution to the risk from smoking is none or very small, whereas 44% wrongly believe it is at least half the risk or more.

It is a common misconception that most vape shops are about turning profit, whilst that may be true from a business perspective, 99.9% of shops on the market offer advice and statistics, not as a sales tactic, but to make you feel comfortable in using an e-cig and understand the effective use of them.

There’ll be more advice on the Katie Trinder Breakfast Show and with Watko in the afternoon throughout October and Smoke Free Life Nottinghamshire, have some stop-smoking advisors in the Four Seasons and Idelwells Shopping Centre throughout October.
