Storm Doris Forces Temporary Closure Of Two Local Attractions

Two of the area’s most popular attractions, the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre and Rufford Abbey Country Park, will be closed to the public tomorrow due to high winds.

It’s expected that “Storm Doris” will generate up to 70mph or 80mph gusts of winds which could batter much of England and Wales tomorrow, according to the amber warning of wind from the Met Office.

Car parks, facilities and public entrances for both of the country parks which are managed by Nottinghamshire County Council, will be closed due to safety concerns to the public.

Park rangers will be on site at both venues but all woodland and tree works will be suspended. At Sherwood Forest, Forest Table will also not be opening.

A planned school visit at Perlethorpe Environmental Education Centre which has also been cancelled.

Both sites will be checked on Thursday to determine whether they can be reopened on Friday 24 February. If there have been any major fallen trees or damaged woodland in the storm, the county council advises it may have to keep parks and green spaces closed, or parts of them, until people can ensure everything is safe.

The council say that from time to time, some services are disrupted due to severe weather, staffing issues, or health and safety concerns and that they always try to keep this to an absolute minimum.

Parts of Britain are braced for gales strong enough to topple trees, damage buildings, knock out power supplies and sweep up ‘flying debris’. The amber 'be prepared' warning for wind covers London and the south east as well as central England and north Wales.
