Stags set for busy summer of rebuilding

8th May 2017

Mansfield Town enter a vital week as they look to get fully prepared for a promotion push in League Two next season.

The Stags' faint play-off hopes evaporated on the final day of the current campaign on Saturday as a 2-2 draw at Crawley Town left Steve Evans' side in twelfth spot, four points away from the top seven.

Danny Rose and Ben Whiteman had helped Mansfield storm into a two goal lead in the opening 22 minutes and, with other scores starting to go their way, it looked as though a seemingly impossible surge into the play-offs could be on.

But, the Stags faltered as the home side fought back with two second-half goals to share the spoils and end the season in frustrating fashion.

And, Evans will not be wasting any time in his efforts to revamp the squad.

He has a meeting scheduled with chairman and owner John Radford on Tuesday to discuss transfer targets before talks with current players are held on Wednesday with the retained list expected quickly after that.

Evans told Mansfield 103.2 after Saturday's game at Crawley that he was expecting Tuesday's meeting to be a "positive" one.

And, speaking at Sunday night's End of Season awards dinner, Mr Radford pledged to back the manager "100%" as the squad gets rebuilt over the summer.

It is expected that the likes of Pat Hoban, Ashley Hemmings, James Baxendale and Scott Shearer - who were not named in the matchday squad at the weekend - will be amongst the players to leave.

And, there is speculation that top scorer Matt Green could also depart after a disappointing second half of his season.

Meanwhile, the five players that had been brought in on loan by Evans - Jake Kean (Sheffield Wednesday), Kyle Howkins (West Bromwich Albion), Ben Whiteman (Sheffield United), Hayden White and Shaquile Coulthirst (both Peterborough United) - will all return to their parent clubs and the wait is on to see if the Stags try and tie up permanent deals for any of them.
