Stags going to Carlisle to win, says Evans

Mansfield Town boss Steve Evans says there will be changes to the Stags line-up for Tuesday night's Checkatrade Trophy match at Carlisle.

It will be the second trip to Brunton Park in quick succession following a 5-2 defeat there in League Two ten days earlier.

Evans told Mansfield 103.2 at Monday's press conference: “Are we going to make changes? Yes.

“We've people who have picked up little niggles and knocks who are maybe available for the weekend. Those under that umbrella will be left at home with the medical team.

“Of course, we're very respectful of the rules and laws associated with the competition and we won't be giving the football club a fine.

“So, we'll be ready to play at Carlisle and it's a wonderful opportunity for five or six lads who perhaps have probably not had a lot of football to show that they should be in the team.”

The Checkatrade Trophy has been a much maligned competition this season but the Stags have a chance to get a step closer to Wembley with a Second Round win in Cumbria.

When asked about his thoughts about the tournament, Evans said: “To involve under-23 clubs from elsewhere has, in my opinion, devalued it.

“Back when the Football League did the planning under a good guy, the Chief Executive Shaun Harvey, the thought process would have been about Mansfield Town fans seeing Premier League players.

“But, of course you're not seeing those, you're seeing youngsters, a lot of them playing against men for the very first time.

“So, that's taken something away from [the competition] but nobody will be telling me that when we kick off at Carlisle.”

The match kicks off at 7.45pm on Tuesday night at Brunton Park and there'll be unrivalled radio coverage of the game in a Midweek Sportsbeat Special along with the rest of the night's football action.
