Staff Head Out Into Ashfield Following Serious Blaze

21st March 2017
News

Firefighters and members of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Community Safety Team will be out and about in Annesley Woodhouse today following a serious fire on Forest Road last week.

The team will be looking to speak to people in the local area and offer a variety of home fire safety advice, as well as some general reassurance, after an 87-year-old man’s house was severely damaged in a blaze that took hold on Friday 17 March.

Crews from Ashfield, Mansfield and Hucknall were called to the fire at around 8.45am and upon arrival found a fire located on the ground floor. Swift action ensured the fire was extinguished safely and spread was prevented, however the house has been left uninhabitable due to severe fire and smoke damage.

Following the fire, the occupant of the property was taken to hospital by East Midlands Ambulance Service with some minor injuries.

A subsequent fire investigation into the cause of the fire revealed that it had started accidentally.

“This incident, and the fact the house is now uninhabitable, shows just how devastating fire can be,” said Robyn Ellis, Risk Reduction Officer for Ashfield.

“However, we really want to emphasise that there are a number of steps people can take to reduce the risk of such an incident happening to them – and that is why we will be on hand between 10am and 12 noon today to offer people what could be life-saving advice.

“What we are particularly keen to highlight is that this individual was an elderly gentleman who lived on his own. A lot of the serious house fires that we have dealt with in recent years have also involved elderly people who live alone, and we would like to encourage anybody who has elderly friends, relatives or neighbours, to maybe take five minutes on a regular basis to just check that they are OK, and that they are living in a safe environment.

“What this means is just checking that they have working smoke alarms, that they have adequate escape plans and routes in place, and that they aren’t regularly doing things such as disposing of cigarettes on carpets, or leaving cooking unattended.”
