Shirebrook Students hit all the right notes

Pupils from the Shirebrook Academy have teamed up with one of the country's most celebrated brass bands, for a once-in-a-lifetime concert.

Members of the Academy's wind band played alongside the Black Dyke Brass Band and Shirebrook Miner's Welfare's band in a concert on Saturday 15th October. Their performance soundtracked a new short film about children's games through the ages called Child's Play, which also involved local students. Music teacher Adam Case said “across the country, brass bands and school bands are disappearing, so it's great for us to be able to carry on the tradition of live music in Shirebrook”.

The short film was produced in conjunction with the First Art project, who organise initiatives across Mansfield, Ashfield and Bolsover, and features students from Shirebrook Academy and its surrounding primary schools. 12-year-old Ross Collier, who saw a preview of the film, said “it's really cool to see how different things were for kids before our era”.
