Sherwood Forest Oak Falls Short In Tree Of The Year Competition
Parliament Oak did not win the 2017 UK Tree of the Year competition.
The prize went to The Gilwell Oak in Essex. The British public casted their vote to not only celebrate the visuals of the tree but the fantastic story it tells. The Gilwell Oak has overseen the growth of a local scout group since early 20th century and is still regarded as a tribute to the scouting movement today.
The Gilwell Oak won the England shortlist and was chosen by the panel of experts to be the UK Tree of the Year. It will represent the UK at the European Tree of the Year in 2018.
Nottinghamshire has previously been home to the winner when The Major Oak won the competition three years ago.
When 'Robin Hood's home' went on the the European stage it was beaten by an Oak tree oin the middle of a football pitch in Estonia.
