Sherwood Forest Hospitals to tour schools and colleges to raise awareness of safe sex

Staff from Sherwood Forest Hospitals are raising awareness of safe sex and relationships this week as they visit schools and colleges across Nottinghamshire in support of Sexual Health Week.

Sexual Health Week, which runs from 11-17 September, is led by charity The Family Planning Association (FPA) and this year is themed ‘Let’s talk about porn’.

The touring stands and confidential clinics will give young people between the ages of 13 and 19 the opportunity to talk to staff from Sherwood Forest Hospitals’ SEXions team about having open and frank discussion about safe sex and consent and the difference between fantasy and reality.

Young people from across the county will also have the opportunity to talk to experts confidentiality and receive non-judgemental advice, test for sexually transmitted diseases, talk about healthy relationships, and receive more information about contraception.

Clinics and stands will be held as follows:

Tuesday 12 September, Ashfield Comprehensive school, 1.20pm to 2.30pm

Wednesday 13 September, West  Nottinghamshire College, 10am to 2pm

Wednesday 13 September, Newark College, noon to 1.30pm

Thursday 14 September, West Nottinghamshire College, 10am to 2pm

Phil Eardley, SEXions Personal Advisor at Sherwood Forest Hospitals, said: “We are looking forward to giving school and college students the opportunity to come and talk to us confidentially and providing them with information on safe sex and the difference between fantasy and reality.”

“We would encourage anybody who would like advice or a chat to come and see us. We hope that by providing information it will give young people the confidence and knowledge that they need to talk more openly about relationships and consent, especially with partners.”

“We’ll also be on hand to provide support and advice surrounding all aspects of sexual health and relationships, information about our C-Card contraception services and provide chlamydia and pregnancy testing, as well as signpost and provide access to other sexual health services.”

SEXions is a confidential sexual health service for young people aged 13-19, and up to 24 for young people with disabilities. Although based at King’s Mill Hospital and at Newark Hospital, SEXions works within the community to provide group sessions in educational settings and offers community drop-in centres.
