REVIEW | Side Splitting Panto – Oh Yes It Is!

It’s never really Christmas until you’ve been to watch a panto – and my Christmas has well and truly been kick-started with laughs, magical ‘oooohss’ and a water gun full in the face – thanks to ‘Jack and The Beanstalk’ at Mansfield Palace Theatre.

I don’t seem to recall a water gun being part of the magical tale of Jack and the Beanstalk from my childhood, but this year’s showing at the Palace has a 3D element and without spoiling things too much, let’s just say the cast and crew do everything in their power to make the 3D sequence with the giant very, VERY, real indeed!

I can’t help but feel the water gun attack was set-up by the naughty Adam Moss playing Simple Simon, who took full delight in my tweet the following morning – either way I cared little, after watching a sterling performance which delivered everything I expected and much more in-between.

Comedian Moss, back for another stint in Mansfield, was on fire with those gags which make you laugh and groan at the same time, his interaction too with the cast and crew highlighted his love for going off script and getting the audience to eat out of the palm of his hand.

Former neighbours star Mark Little was brilliant as baddie Fleshcreep and gave out as much as he took, as the cast mocked his acting background and native Australian accent, whilst established Panto dame Craig Ansell delivered a laugh a minute display as Dame Trott – the scene with Daisy the Cow is Panto at its best… talk about milking it!

Bringing 3D into the show was a real risk but one which paid off, combining the new age technology and graphics with the old school “well, we’ll have to sing it again then won’t we” routine.

Silly adaptations of modern day songs drag this age old classic into the modern day in a show that will have you laughing, dancing, singing, sitting on the edge of your seat and if you’re me, soaked in water!

A brilliant night out was had by all as staff at Mansfield 103.2 this morning mock the catchphrases from the show rather than talk about the snow, which just goes to show that Mansfield Palace Theatre delivered a display worthy of the big city once more.

There are still a scattering of tickets remaining, visit for further information or call the Box Office on Mansfield 633111 you won’t regret it!
