Review of practices at Sports Direct

There's going to be an independent review of working practices and corporate governance at Sports Direct. The report was originally going to be by a law firm which does other work for the retailer, however It'll now be done by another group, after shareholders raised concerns.

The announcement has been received positively by activists and politicians in the area.
Mansfield labour party leader, Sonya Ward, said: “Unite the union were asking for this at the previous board meeting, and they should be commended for bringing this to the public’s attention, in holding them to account.”
Rob Hill, the co-chair of the Maun Valley Citizens group, said: “I think it’s encouraging that Sports Direct are taking on a more transparent way of dealing with their problems, they’re a big employer round here, we want them to be successful, but also to pursue policies of fair employment, and appointing somebody independent will help with that.”
Maun Valley Citizens are also planning to send a letter to Sports Direct encouranging them to engage more with the community in Shirebrook and the surrounding area.

Mr Hill said: “Because they’re a big company, they have an affect on communities around them, and we want them to engage with that properly and i’m sure they’ll get great benefit from it.”
