Reach Awarded Lottery Funding

News, Mansfield

Reach Learning Disability has launched a new health and wellbeing programme to enable adults with learning disabilities to feel healthier and fitter.

The programme called Health Kick, will be delivered by trained staff and it will run for 12 months at Reach’s base in Mansfield.

A grant of £9,383 was awarded by the Big Lottery Fund to Reach Learning Disability for the programme.

Over the course of 12 months trained staff will cover a range of topics such as cooking on a budget, maintain a healthy body and mind, personal hygiene and first aid.

Clients will gain an understanding about nutrition, being aware of calories in food and having a balanced diet.

There will also be guest speakers throughout the year who will give talks and workshops to raise awareness on various topics.

Twice a month, clients will take part in sporting activities such as Boccia and yoga.

Reach Mansfield held a launch day where clients were invited to an introduction taster session.

They told tutors what they wanted to gain from the programme.

Some clients said they wanted to ‘lose weight’ ‘learn to swim’ ‘learn to cook’, ‘learn to look after themselves’ and ‘learn to deal with stress’.

They put their suggestions on the Wall of Ideas, they filled out a personal goal sheet, took part in a health and well-being quiz and participated in a physical exercise.

Zelma Hutchinson, centre manager for Reach Mansfield, said: “This programme is about trying new things and to address healthy bodies, mindfulness and well-being.

“We will work jointly with mental health services and they will contribute some sessions as well as Bob who is our sports coach.

“The programme will allow clients to socialise and learn with each other in a relaxed learning environment.

“We thank the National Lottery players for their support, without them all these amazing projects wouldn’t be funded.”
