Poppies Have “No Political Meaning” Say Royal British Legion

The Royal British Legion have urged FIFA to rethink its ban on England and Scotland players wearing a poppy during next weekend’s international break.

The Legion have written letter to FIFA stating "The red poppy is a symbol of emembrance and hope for a peaceful future. It has no political, religious or commercial meaning”

An extract from the letter also reads "This small red flower that grew on the devastated battlefields of the First World War is a solemn reminder of the cost of war and the price of peace. The red poppy is worn so that we never forget the commitment and sacrifices of the serving, never forget those who need help to live on through the consequences of war, and always remember our troubled world needs reconciliation and peace.”

"We ask you, Fifa, in the strongest terms, that you rethink your approach to remembrance and the use of the poppy, and permit players to honour the commitment and sacrifices of the Armed Forces."

The statements of the Legion were echoed today by Royal British Legion volunteer Joe Martin, who helps organise the poppy appeal and run the poppy shop in Mansfield.

“It isn’t a political statement; it is simply a symbol of remembrance for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Every person that joins up (to the forces) will sign up for a term of engagement, I believe the modern day is nine years, and nine years later the mind-set is that they will come out exactly the same as when they went in – but of course with different conflicts they could come out injured or they might be killed on active service. For that, the poppy is a symbol of remembrance – and nothing more”
