Political history in Mansfield – but have I packed enough cobs?

Political history in Mansfield – but have I packed enough cobs?

Somehow, before the evening of Thursday June 8th, I'd managed to avoid ever working a nightshift. But I think my sleeping patterns were a long way from Theresa May's mind when she called for a General Election, and led to it becoming 'all hands on deck' here at Mansfield 103.2.

Preparing for an eight-hour overnight broadcast from four different locations takes a lot of work – there's sorting out security passes for all our reporters, making sure all the right equipment is in all the right places, and doing a bit of research to make sure we actually know what we're talking about. But I was probably most focused on what I was going to eat overnight (no surprises there). In the end, it looked more like I was planning a hike in the Peak District than a radio show - packing cobs, sausage rolls, crisps, chocolate bars, biscuits, bananas, tea and coffee was probably overdoing it...

As the night began, and I was stood in Studio 1 hearing the exit poll and early results come in, it became clear that this was going to be an historic night. And so it proved in our area as well, with Mansfield electing its very first Conservative MP. As Mansfield had been Labour since 1923, you can sort of understand why the Mansfield returning officer mistakenly announced that Sir Alan Meale had won again – force of habit and all that.

Later, climbing into bed at about 8am, I was able to reflect on a possible turning point in politics overnight. I've always had a soft spot for following General Election coverage through the night, so it was a real buzz to actually be able to host the results for Mansfield 103.2. After all, elections don't come around every five minutes – do they?
