Panthers hope for historic Champions Hockey League night

7th November 2017

Nottingham Panthers will need to turn around a two-goal deficit on Tuesday night if their extraordinary Champions Hockey League run is to continue.

Head coach Corey Neilson's side go into their Round of 16 Second Leg tie with Zurich Lions at the Motorpoint Arena Nottingham 3-1 down after the first game in Switzerland last Tuesday.

The Panthers became the first British side to reach the knockout stages of the competition after they won their group despite being ranked bottom of the 32 teams taking part.

Tuesday's game is being dubbed the biggest in British club hockey history and captain Steve Lee told Panthers Radio: "We all have confidence in our ability to get the job done but we're going to have to play one hell of a game.

"Practice has been good, though, the guys are rested and we hope to win."

The Panthers will be without forward Mark Derlago who is on compassionate leave in Canada whilst Neilson, who missed the weekend's domestic action for similar reasons, will be back in charge after returning to the UK in the past couple of days.

The club have begun a TUESDAY is BELIEVE DAY campaign and are hoping a capacity crowd can help get them into the Quarter-Finals.

General Manager Gary Moran said: "Make no mistake the Zurich team are very, very good. We will have to be at our very best and hope they’re not but we’re going to give it our best shot.

"The energy the fans can give us will be crucial, teams sometimes get caught in the headlights when our building gets rocking, we’re all in this together."

Face-off is at 7pm.
