Organ Donors To Be Remembered At Awards Evening

9th October 2017
News

The selfless actions of organ donors and their families will be recognised at a special event taking place at County Hall this week.

Nottinghamshire County Council Chairman Councillor John Handley will be attending the event on Thursday evening at 6.15pm.

Entitled: ‘The Order of St John Organ Donor award ceremony’, bereaved families of 13 local people who have donated organs upon their death to help save the lives of others, will receive posthumous awards.

The Order of St John is a royal order of chivalry, and the families will receive signed certificates from Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, The Grand Prior of the Order.

The event has been organised by the Order of St John in partnership with NHS Blood and Transplant Services, and the High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire will be in attendance to present the awards.

One of the organisers, Janet Franks, Chairman of Nottinghamshire County Priory Group, said: “We are delighted the Chairman is able to attend and it makes it even more meaningful to the families, through this event, the high regard that each donor is held.”

Elsewhere, the Chairman will officially open Gotham Community Partnership Library at Gotham Memorial Hall, in Meadow End, Gotham on Friday morning.

And on Sunday, he will attend a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the death of William Rockley, and the 90th anniversary of Rockley Memorial Park, in Park Road, Radcliffe on Trent.

William Rockley was killed at Ypres in 1917, and his father Lisle bought some land and created a park. He then presented the park to the village in 1927 in honour of Radcliffe men and his son who served in the Great War, and today Rockley Memorial Park is popular with the local community and visitors as well as being a splendid living memorial.

There will be a short commemoration ceremony in the park, re-enacting the event when the park was handed over to the community, including part of a speech from Viscount Galway, which was read out in 1927. There will also be an exhibition at Grange Hall in Radcliffe.
