NSPCC brands the internet as a ‘playground for paedophiles’
Children’s charities are continuing to warn of the dangers posed by the internet, following a 24 per-cent rise in the number of reported cases of online sexual abuse
Childline held 3,716 counselling sessions with youngsters and teens related to online sexual abuse in 2015-16, compared to 2,994 the previous year.
However Lawrence Orme from Childline’s Nottingham branch believes the increase in reports is down to an increased awareness and education of children on issues surrounding sexual exploitation.
He said: “There’s nothing to suggest that the problem of online sexual abuse or grooming is increasing, I think its more about the awareness of it, and people coming forward to talk about these issues.”
“It’s really important if a young person is concerned about a relationship, or if they’e not really comfortable with something they’re being asked to do online, is to seek support or to seek help.”
Young people are encouraged to speak to Childline or a trusted adult if they feel they are being exploited on the internet.
