Notts Police Calling On Employers To Help Bolster Numbers

26th March 2020

Nottinghamshire Police is pressing regional employers to consider paid leave to Special Constables to support the force in managing the impact of Coronavirus locally.

In the wake of the national crisis created by Covid-19, it is expected that police forces across the UK will come under increasing strain as they try to maintain business-as-usual policing while managing rising levels of sickness and self-isolation of officers and staff.

The force has joined other calls nationally to free up Specials as they plan for managing this crisis.

There are currently more than 10,000 (168 in Nottinghamshire) Special Constables in the UK, warranted officers with all the powers of a regular police officer who volunteer their services. They are deployed in their local communities to support the day-to-day operations of their forces and, crucially, provide resilience at critical times.

The appeal is to primarily to businesses which are already part of the national Employer Supported Policing Scheme (ESP), an agreement where Special Constable employees are provided with additional paid leave to allow them to undertake policing duties.

But even employers who are not currently part of the ESP are being asked to show their support by joining the scheme and helping to meet this unique call to action from police and government.

The force have asked for the following to help support the national effort to tackle the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic:

  • Any former and current Special Constables
  • Cadets
  • Police Support Volunteers (PSVs)

The force has had a number of offers from former staff to help already this week and we are encouraging others to contact the Citizens in Policing department.

Superintendent Suk Verma said: "This is an extraordinary moment and one that requires a collective response. The service faces unprecedented challenges to maintain policing while managing rising levels of sickness and self-isolation among officers and staff.

“Our Special Constables play a vital role in the police service, a service which will be placed under great strain over the coming months. Those officer support our overall response.

"We have been delighted that so many people have already.

"We are looking for three roles in particular. Current Specials/PSVs who are fit to work additional hours, former Specials/PSVs or indeed new PSV’s that want to join and finally any available Cadets to support the social crisis challenge."

Anyone interested is asked to please email with basic information including name, dob, address, whether they hold a current driving licence and any area that they are happy to support, to:  Citizensinpolicing@Nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk

Policing across the country is also considering other ways of managing the surge in demand and expected drop in capacity created by Coronavirus, including relaxing rules on officers re-joining the service after retirement.
